The Mens PowerSpa ~ by Daniel Wilson

On Thursday night, I had a dream about Jack The Ripper. Scary, cloaked man wandering the streets of Victorian London searching for throats to slit with his giant straight blade.

Obviously my spa day Friday was on my mind.

In seven or eight odd years of shaving, I have never been shaved by anyone else. Not a boyfriend, girlfriend or parent figure, so I was actually a little apprehensive about my visit to Men’s Power Spa.

My fears were ungrounded. Ashley greeted me at the door with offers of water or tea and then took me on the tour of the small, but streamline facility. The concept of the spa is an urban facility which provides services in a masculine environment (that men are used to?) and find in their favourite clothing store or sports bar (point - sports themed wall art, etc...)

We toured the massage rooms, manicure area, locker room, and ultimately, the room where I would be pampered. Offered my choice of the cd’s available, we listened to Radiohead’s OK Computer for the remainder of my visit.

Removal of shirt and jewellery was all that was required before I slipped under the warm sheets on the slightly clinical bed. Warm towels were wrapped around my head. Some sort of mild skin exfoliant (chemical and not manual abrasion) was applied and moist cotton balls placed gingerly over my eyes. The actual shave was preceded by a shave oil and then cream before Ashley whipped out… a Gillette Mach 3.

Apparently, according to Ashley, the old fashioned straight blades are unsanitary, and also most men do not know how to shave properly, so she uses the kind of razor they would at home to teach proper technique. She didn't even make me feel like an idiot when I quite obviously didn't know how to shave properly (small strokes going with the grain and using an x shape to get closer, never against the grain, and with only luke warm water).

Sadly I had been a little overzealous with my hair growth in preparation for the shave so the shave took longer than Ashley anticipated (my fault, any excuse to not scrape hot metal over my face and I’ll take it). We did not have time for the full facial treatment, but it really sounded lovely.

With the meterosexual still not dead, and normal men starting to pay attention to concepts like not washing their faces with Dove soap (seriously guys, you will look like your retiree age when your 28), the men’s spa trend is on the rise.

Men’s PowerSpa offers many spa services like hot rock massages, exfoliating body treatments, scalp therapy and even Botox injections. They books stag parties, corporate bonding sessions for Bay St. suits and any other combination of guys that wanna look good together.

p.s. Ashley could not be any further from Jack the Ripper, and I would trust her with sharp things around my neck any time.
